The piece below, “What We Were, What We Are, What We Will Be,” was completed in 2014 and first shown at Castle FitzJohns, a gallery on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. The video is scored to Glenn Gould’s rendition of Bach’s “Contrapunctus XIV” from “The Art of the Fugue,” BWV 1080, which was not yet complete at Bach’s death in 1750. It’s often performed with a posthumously finished version, but Gould chose to play it with its sudden, unexpected stop.
